Like, some instructions might just be in microcode these days, but a lot of transistors must still be wasted for instructions and addressing modes not used today
Like, we can't make the individual gates much smaller because of the laws of physics, so at some point someone needs to start ripping out barely used functionality so those transistors can be used for something else (as a die is really constrained in size)
